A replacement key must do more than fit the ignition. We program compatible transponder chips to communicate with your vehicle’s immobiliser and test the applicable key functions.

Professional transponder key programming

Match the Key to the Vehicle

A transponder key contains an electronic chip that communicates with the vehicle’s immobiliser. If its identification or security data is not recognised, the engine may not start even when the blade fits and turns.

Using suitable diagnostic and programming equipment, a compatible replacement or spare key can be registered according to the requirements of the specific make, model and security system.

What programming does

Electronic Authentication Before Engine Start

Programming registers the key’s electronic chip with the immobiliser or anti-theft system. When the key is used, the vehicle checks its identification before allowing the engine to start.

This is separate from the mechanical cut. A blade may operate a lock or turn the ignition while an unrecognised chip still prevents the vehicle from starting. Some newer systems also use remote, smart-key or rolling-code technology.

When programming is needed

Signs the Vehicle Needs a Key Check

Door access and engine authorisation can be different functions. Diagnosis identifies whether programming, compatibility or another electronic fault is involved.

01 / LOSTOriginal Key Lost

A replacement may require both a suitable blade and electronic registration.

02 / SPAREAdditional Key

A compatible spare must be recognised by the vehicle before it can start the engine.

03 / NO STARTCut Key Will Not Start

The blade may turn while the immobiliser rejects an unprogrammed chip.

04 / RECOGNITIONKey Not Detected

Inconsistent or failed recognition can point to programming or chip issues.

05 / REPLACEMENTDamaged Key Changed

A replacement key, shell or transponder may need compatibility confirmation.

06 / COMPATIBILITYPurchased Key

A supplied replacement must be suitable for the exact vehicle and key system.

Programming workflow

Identify, Match, Program, Test

The correct procedure depends on the vehicle’s electronic architecture. Accurate details and a compatibility check come before programming.

01 / IDENTIFY

Vehicle & Key

Confirm make, model, year, key type, working-key status and relevant VIN information.

02 / VERIFY

Compatibility

Check that the blade, transponder and electronics match the vehicle’s requirements.

03 / PROGRAM

Electronic Pairing

Use suitable automotive equipment to register the key as authorised where supported.

04 / CONFIRM

Function Testing

Check engine start, recognition, locks, remote controls and applicable key functions.

Why a replacement may not start

Programming Is One Part of the Diagnosis

A newly cut key does not automatically mean the vehicle will start. The fault may involve the transponder, compatibility, recognition, immobiliser or a separate transmitter and receiver issue.

Replacement key

Lost Original

The new key may need physical cutting and electronic programming, subject to the vehicle and available procedure.

Additional key

Program a Spare Early

A working backup can reduce disruption if the primary key is later damaged or lost.

Accurate diagnosis

Remote vs Transponder

A fob battery or pairing fault is different from immobiliser authentication, even when symptoms appear related.

Vehicle-specific security

Different Systems Need Different Procedures

Manufacturers and model generations use different key and immobiliser technologies. Programming must be based on the exact vehicle rather than a one-process-fits-all assumption.

Transponder Programming

Registers the chip with the security system so the vehicle can authenticate the key.

Frequently asked questions

Transponder Key Answers

Programming requirements and available procedures vary by vehicle, key type and security system.

What is a transponder key?

It is a vehicle key containing an electronic chip that communicates with the vehicle’s security or immobiliser system before engine start is authorised.

Does a transponder key need programming?

In many vehicles, yes. A replacement chip generally needs to be recognised by the immobiliser, although the exact requirement varies by vehicle.

Can a transponder key be cut without programming?

The physical blade can potentially be cut, but cutting alone may not allow the engine to start when electronic authentication is required.

Why does my new key unlock the car but not start it?

The mechanical or remote function may work while the transponder remains unprogrammed, incompatible or unrecognised by the immobiliser.

Do all cars use the same programming process?

No. Manufacturers and model generations use different key, immobiliser and security systems, so the procedure must match the specific vehicle.
